Computer problems have caused the Columbus police to outfit the computers in their cruisers with software to guard against a computer virus sweeping the country. Police officials say the computer worm has affected at least 100 computers in Columbus police cruisers. The worm attacks certain Microsoft products and can cause a number of problems for the patrol car computers. It renders them unable to electronically communicate with dispatchers, receive background information, run license plate and arrest-warrant checks, find street locations or see photos of suspects. The in-dash computers are in 300 of the division’s cruisers.
