The deaths of at least seven people since 1998 in the Hydraulic undertow of low dams has gotten the attention of several state lawmakers. Ohio has hundreds of low dams that slow water flow dams that slow water flow and create pools behind them. Stat representative Jon Husted says the dams are very dangerous. The republican from Kettering plans to contact the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Miami Conservancy District about the hazard of the dams. Dams of this type were originally built to create a pool of water for a mill or farm operation. Today, they have the effect of maintaining water levels for recreation. Ohio has no standards for warning signs at low dams despite the hazard, which also has led to uncounted injuries since 1998.
