The Muskingum County Health Department reports a few cases of viral meningitis in the area. But don’t get alarmed just yet. There are two types of meningitis: bacterial and viral. Bacterial is more dangerous and must be treated with antibiotics. The kind area doctors are seeing is viral meningitis. This involves flu like symptoms such as headaches, fever and stiff neck. Health Department officials said the best medicine is plenty of rest and fluids. There are only ten reported cases of viral meningitis in Muskingum County. The most recent was a child at Pleasant Grove Elementary School. While contagious, it is mostly passed through contact of the mouth, so you are not likely to get it by being near someone with viral meningitis.
