The rising cost of malpractice insurance rates is costing some local doctors their practices. One doctor resigned and another has taken a leave of absence, both as a result of significant increases in their malpractice insurance rates. President and CEO of Genesis Healthcare Systems, Tom Seiber, says that they know of no other positions that will be leaving the community at this time because of the situation. Although there's little Genesis can do to give physicians lower premiums, Seiber says they are looking into a few possible programs. One option may be a self-insured group program for the Zanesville medical community, including the hospital and physicians. The analysis of the program is expected to take about six months to complete. In Seiber's opinion, the only way to fix the problem is to find a balance between adequate malpractice compensation and frivolous, excessive awards.
