The Penn Traffic Company plans to close 16 supermarkets in four states, including eight Ohio Big Bear stores. Big Bear stores in Zanesville and the rest of southeastern Ohio are not included on the shutdown list. The closures would mean the loss of about 1000 jobs. The Syracuse-based regional grocer must first get permission from the U-S bankruptcy court in White Plains, New York, which is overseeing the company’s second chapter 11 bankruptcy in five years. Company officials say the 16 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia are among Penn Traffic’s least profitable. Penn Traffic plans to close ten big bear stores in Ohio and West Virginia which employ a total of 633 people.
