Trade officials say the World Trade Organization has reaffirmed its position that U-S tariffs on steel imposed last year are illegal. Officials say an appeals panel has upheld major findings in a July ruling. It was issued after a complaint from the European Union and seven other countries. The ruling is expected to be made public later today. The E-U has threatened to impose sanctions on U-S imports if it fails to end the duties within weeks. Ohio Congressman Bob Ney is calling the decision “unconscionable.” The St. Clairsville republican says it’s unfair for the W-T-O to target U-S steel tariffs while nations such as China are manipulating its currency and flooding the market with cheap goods.
