Zanesville Police Arrest 12 Prostitutes
Zanesville Police get tough on prostitution after receiving numerous complaints from area residents and businesses regarding prostitutes in the Zanesville area. Officers arrested over 10 women Tuesday night.
Officers with the Zanesville Police Departments Narcotics Unit worked an undercover operation in the downtown area and the south end of town.
Officers say they arrested 12 prostitutes from Monday evening through 4 a.m. Wednesday morning.
“In the last week we surveyed the areas of Luck, Pine, Ridge we knew where the girls were at, Seventh Street we went out last night with undercover police officers of the narcotics unit and just one at a time picked them up,” said Lt. Tony Coury, Zanesville Police Department.
Eleven of the 12 women were arraigned in Zanesville Municipal Court this morning on charges of soliciting and two were charged with drug paraphernalia. Eight plead guilty and will serve anywhere from 30 to 120 days in jail. Three suspects pleaded not guilty and had bond set at $1,000 each and a hearing next month.
Officers say the latest arrests are part of a major crackdown on prostitution in the area.
“We do it a couple of times a year, they're prevalent right now a lot of them are out of jail throughout the year we usually make a lot of arrests for solicitation, but right now it seemed like we had 15 to 20 girls out and we were really able to hurt that,” said Lt. Coury.
Coury says they will continue to address the prostitution problem in the area an says with two prostitutes dead and one missing, it should serve as a wake up call for those involved in that lifestyle.
