Break out your lederhosen it's time once again for Oktoberfest in downtown Zanesville.
Saturday September 26th in the Secrest Auditorium parking lot everyone's invited to experience a traditional Oktoberfest celebration. And in keeping with tradition, it's celebrated in September.
"We get a lot of questions on why is it not Septemberfest or Septoberfest or all kinds of clever names people come up with, but we are sticking with the tradition that Oktoberfest starts in September, it's about a 10 day celebration that takes place in Munich," says Dana Matz, president Zanesville Downtown Association.
Oktoberfest will feature German foods, beer and wine, as well as performances by several German-inspired musical and dance acts. Whether you have a German heritage or not Matz says the event is more about bringing everyone in the community together to have fun.
"Over 40 percent of Ohioans claim a Germanic genealogy and so we looked at we have the Gus Macker in June, we have the 4th of July in July obviously, then we have the Ribfest in August, then we said let's do something in September, close to October and so this fit perfectly," says Matz.
During Oktoberfest, Secrest will also be hosting Barbershop quartet concerts and 4th Street will be closed from Shinnick to Elberon Streets.Organizers are asking those coming to the events to exit Interstate 70 on the 5th Street exit, go up to Market Street and try to find parking from there.
Those who drive German-made Volkswagen Bugs will have preferred parking in front of Secrest.
