Today is a day that the city of Zanesville and Muskingum County have been looking forward to for a very long time.
While production at the Zanesville Avon Plant, located within the Eastpointe Development Park, has been underway since March, Avon Executives held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the plant this afternoon.
WHIZ's Emily Baird has more.
"Together, we have created a tremendous facility, state-of-the-art, that will elevate our performance and our service to our representatives, " says an Avon spokesman.
It is a facility that other businesses around the world are hoping to look at not only because of its advanced equipment but its efforts here in Zanesville.
"Collecting and re-use of rain water, water efficient landscaping, energy-efficient lighting, recycling materials, the furnishings, and other building materials, " says Avon Chairman and CEO, Andrea Jung.
Jung says Avon made Newsweek's list of Biggest Green Companies. It ranked number 25 out of all the Fortune 500 Companies and number one among personal care product companies.
It is a facility that Muskingum County Commissioner Jerry Lavy says he hopes will prompt more activity in the area.
"Perhaps we can get additional businesses into Muskingum County. Those businesses are looking to see what kind of fine facility this is and what we have here at Eastpointe Development Park, " says Lavy.
Eastpointe Development Park has a great location when it comes to highways and transportation. Avon Senior Manager of Corporate Communications, Jennifer Vargas, says Avon chose this particular location because of the community.
"There are amazing people working for us here. They are very skilled. They know how to use the advances technology that we have in place, which is huge, " says Vargas.
The Zanesville Avon plant currently employs about 450 workers, but more positions are opening up, which Governor Ted Strickland says is a great opportunity to many Ohioans.
"We will work to continue to be a good partner with this great company in the years to come, " says Strickland.
Strickland and Zwelling say Avon has a lot invested in this plant.
"The Vice President of Avon, and at the groundbreaking, he told me Avon has done its homework and the future of our company rides in and out of Zanesville, Ohio, " says Zwelling.
"The Zanesville Avon Plant will be replacing two us facilities, one in Newark, Delaware and the other in Glenview, Illinois. It will be making the Zanesville Avon Plant one of three distributing facilities in the entire country-distributing 50% of the merchandise Avon produces.
"You know, it says it's the company for women, but as you serve women, you're doing a great service to the men as well, " says Strickland.
