Sunday at Philo Lutheran Church it was all about the veterans.
Frank Clifton, a former weather observer for the Air Force, says he was honored by the ceremony held Sunday morning before church services.
"VFW post from the Philo, Duncan Falls area, hoisted the colors and one of the men gave a statement about what veterans are and it was really good, very well received," says Clifton.
After church, members of Philo Lutheran and veterans enjoyed a delicious meal. Besides patriotic themed desserts, there were also door prizes and people donated items to be put in care packages for the troops. The care packages will be sent to Chad Orwig, a member of the church, and his unit currently serving overseas. Veterans like Dr. David Schroder say the community is very supportive, but young people sometimes have the wrong idea about veterans.
"They think we are some kind of men that like war and so I want to point out that not all of us were in the war, but we were willing to serve in the military and give up several years of our civilian careers in order to defend this nation," says Dr. Schroder a Paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division.
Dr. Schroder says his time in the service made him who he is today. This is the third year Philo Lutheran Church has held a ceremony and luncheon for veterans.
