Speak motivates students

Fifth graders in Zanesville City Schools took a break from class Thursday morning to listen to a motivational speaker.

The G.O.O.D. program, which stands for Going On Or Defeated, is sponsored by the local Lion's Club.

"It is about students making some choices to overcome obstacles and everyone has a chance to be successful," says Flora Martin, the Director of Student Services and Special Ed.

The speaker, Ron Derry a former teacher who went blind years ago and spoke to students about how to overcome obstacles in their lives. Martin says she hopes students walk away knowing with hard work and perserverance, they can overcome anything. After Derry's speech, teachers from each school recognized 16 outstanding students.

"They choose what they wanted to recognize them for, whether it was attendance, perseverance, good listening skills, something that they have made a hard effort to overcome that was maybe not the best thing for them," says Martin.

Martin says Zanesville city schools plan on giving out G.O.O.D. awards each quarter. Below is a complete list of all the G.O.O.D.
