The Muskingum County Sheriff's Office is saddened this week by the loss of a former K-9 officer.
Retired k-9 officer Nitro passed away Monday evening from complications of spine deterioration. Nitro was partnered with Sgt. Pat Keck for nine years on the force.
"Nitro and his handler Pat Keck served as citizens of this county beyond the normal patterns and they also were very recognized in the surrounding counties as well because for a while, Nitro was the only explosive dog in a six county area," said Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz.
Nitro was trained in explosive detection, article detection and suspect tracking and apprehension.
The sheriff said he has fond memories of Nitro.
"One minute they can be taking a bite out of someone who justly deserves it and the next minute, they can be laying on their backs, letting you scratch their belly," he said.
There will not be a memorial service for Nitro.
The sheriff's office currently has four working dogs on its police force.
