Physical activity has numerous health benefits, but it can cause wear and tear on your knees.
Instead of receiving a total knee replacement, the Orthopaedic Associates in Zanesville are offering residents an alternative...a partial knee replacement.
"They have extremely good track record they perform as well as total knee replacements have, which means they have an excellent 10 and 20 year survival rate as far as the implant is concerned," says Dr. Steven Kimberly,"this is an example of a partial replacement, you can see all the rest of the knee has been left alone except for the area that had the wear. Now instead of bone rubbing on bone here we have the metal and plastic implant which will glide back and forth and all the ligaments around the knee and the bone around the knee have been untouched."
With a partial knee replacement, all the healthy bone and ligaments do not need to be removed. The six doctors at Orthopaedic Associates in Zanesville underwent special training to be able to perform partial knee replacements. Dr. Kimberly says partial knee replacements are especially good for younger than average joint patients and elderly joint patients, because it saves more of the knee and recovery is much faster.
"The hospital stay for a partial replacement is typically an overnight stay, come in on Monday go home the next. For a total knee replacement you are probably looking at two or three days in the hospital and depending on how strong and how independent you are and how much help you have it could be longer," says Dr. Kimberly.
To learn more about partial knee replacement from Dr. Kimberly, Genesis is holding a presentation Monday the 8th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Genesis-Bethesda Meeting Rooms 1,2 and 3. It is free to the public and there will a representative from Orthopaedic Associates on hand if residents would like to make an appointment to see Dr. Kimberly. To register call (740) 455-4949.
