Zanesville residents were seeing red Friday.
To raise awareness for the American Red Cross, the Muskingum County Community Youth Foundation encouraged all residents to wear red Friday. Special "Red Day 2010" t-shirts were also sold to raise money for the Muskingum Valley Red Cross and got a great response from local banks.
"We did a battle of the banks and got several local banks involved and Century was our top sales and they sold 132 shirts at all their branches. So I am pretty sure that here downtown is not the only bank that is painted in red today and I know the students were really excited to have the support from the community," says Jamie Hoover with the Muskingum County Community Foundation.
Huntington, North Valley and People's Bank also sold several t-shirts to their employees. Hoover says the t-shirt sales doubled from last year. Even Bishop Rosecrans High School held a dodgeball tournament to help raise money. Last year "Red Day 2010" raised around $1,700 and this year organizers are hoping for $3,000. The Muskingum Valley Red Cross says its disaster relief fund is always in the red, so events like these greatly help.
"You know there is always just a miracle out there that helps us and the community youth foundation is definitely one of those wonderful miracles in this community that stepped up to help the Red Cross and I just cannot thank them enough," says Marlene Henderson with the Muskingum Valley Red Cross.
More than 450 shirts were sold for "Red Day 2010" and organizers say it is not just about raising money, but also raising awareness for the Red Cross.
