As children tear into their peeps and chocolate bunnies, doctors advise parents keep a close eye on how much candy their children are eating.
A big part of celebrating Easter is eating candy. While health officials say a serving of dark chocolate once a day is healthy, excessive amounts of candy and chocolate is bad for your health for many reasons.
"That your taking in, one, too many calories. Two, if you eat lots and lots of it, some children get stomach aches and adults and it can sometimes even shall we say have a laxative effect," tells Dr. Vicki Whitacre with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department.
If a child eats all their candy in one sitting it often causes stomach aches and large amounts of sugar make the pancreas work overtime to process it.
"If you do that continually you are probably working your way up to diabetes, which is sugar problems and the other thing is you are going to gain weight," says Dr. Vicki Whitacre.
Dr. Whitacre says children can have candy, it is just all about moderation and spreading out your intake of sweets.
