The South Zanesville Fire Department was called out to a large grass fire Tuesday afternoon.
It happened in the 3000-block of Ridge Avenue in Springfield Township around around 4:30.
"Once we got on scene we had a pretty good sized fire, a lot of smoke, so we called for mutual aide companies from Newton and National Trails, but we got a pretty quick knock down on the fire so we were able to cancel our mutual aide companies," says Lt. Robert Kirkbridge, South Zanesville Fire Department.
Lt. Kirkbride says the blaze was caused by an uncontrolled burn.
"We have the ability to call the EPA and cite, but this was just a mistake on the homeowners part there was nothing malicious involved so we just warned the homeowner briefed them on the laws," he says.
Burning is banned across the state from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Kirkbride says you need to keep burns 1000 feet away from structures and should never burn garbage. He says conditions are dry right now and homeowners shouldn't burn unless absolutely necessary.
