You may have noticed a few safety additions to Maple Avenue in Zanesville.
After the construction updates on the main road last summer, the city and Ohio Department of Transportation worked together to improve the project in both access and safety.
"Some of the major improvements we've done, there is now a left turn arrow if you're heading northbound on Maple at Kroger," said City Engineer Chip Saunders. "That will make it easier to make that turn without having to fight the traffic southbound."
There will also be a left turning arrow going southbound at Bell Street, allowing you to turn into Wal-mart and the Genesis Healthplex.
"We think that's going to help people get in and out of those places better," said Saunders. "There weren't a lot of protected left turns on maple and with the medians, it made it more difficult. We think this is going to relieve that problem."
Two pedestrian improvements are also in the works. New handicapped ramps are being added to the intersection of Adair and Euclid avenues as well as the intersection of Maple and Forest avenues. They should be completed by the end of the week.
Saunders notes that the traffic flow may be affected by the addition of the turn lanes. He says they plan to monitor and adjust the timing if needed.
