Zanesville’s Stars and Stripes on the River 4th of July celebration may end up fizzling out this year.

The big summer time party may not happen due to funding problems.

Zanesville Jaycee President David Mortimer says he does not want to be in panic mode, but donations are way down for the event that is totally dependent on money that can be raised locally.

"Right now we're about halfway there, not quite," said Mortimer. "We're a little concerned with the economy that we may struggle to get the amount of money we need to have the event where we want it to be."

He says it costs around $13,000 to produce the event that includes a spectacular fireworks display and bands, food and other entertainment.

Mortimer is making a plea to the public to step forward and make a donation so the annual 4th of July celebration will take place in downtown Zanesville this year.

If you would like to donate, call David Mortimer at 454-2545.
