Newark Gas Leak

A natural gas leak caused some major problems in Newark Thursday.

It happened around 10 a.m.  near the BP Station at Mount Vernon Road and Deo Drive and forced evacuations in that area.

Newark Fire Chief Jack Stickradt says the problem occurred after a natural gas line was struck by construction workers realigning Deo Drive. He says one of the contractors drilled through a high pressure natural gas line , a rather large line around 8" in diameter and carries 70 lbs.per square inches and caused a large plume of natural gas "

Chief Stickradt says the BP Station, Colonial Shopping Center and Westgate Motors were all evacuated.

Officials asked residents to avoid the area until the leak was repaired which was expected to be around 5:00 p.m.

Chief Stickradt says drivers could also expect some traffic back ups in that area.

No injuries were reported due to the leak.
