Registering Structures

Zanesville City Council is moving forward with a piece of legislation that targets properties that are both vacant and abandoned.

Councilmembers approved a first reading of the ordinance, with some saying these structures are beginning to plague parts of the city.

"That really does damage property values. It damages the will of people to revitalize their own neighborhood and sometimes even stay in the neighborhood, " says Councilman Mark Baker.

The current ordinance states that the owners of these structure would need to register them with the city.

"It requires them to have a local agent that's responsible for the property that we can hold accountable for mowing the grass, keeping it secure, cleaning up the trash that's on the property. That's the biggest thing is making them have a local contact, " says City Building Official, Tim Smith.

Council President Dan Vincent, on the recommendation of Councilman David Tarbert, approved sending the ordinance before a Code Enforcement Meeting. It will take place in City Hall next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
