ZHS Day Two

Today marks day two of the demolition of Zanesville High School, and many are calling it bittersweet.

Where once stood a gymnasium and an auditorium now lies piles of rubble and a few auditorium seats. The first hit was yesterday, but a steady flow of people poured through today to remember the good times while anticipating the new.

"It's really sad to see a part of history go down although when you walk to the back and see what's back there and it's going to be so much nicer and so much better and it's, we all fall apart with age and that's exactly what the building did," says ZHS graduate, Mike Winland.

While many have a special connection, not all are like Mike Winland. The old gymnasium was named after his father who Mike says would support the new building.

"It's sad but my father would be the first one to tell you it's for the kids and if that means getting rid of the old and putting in brand new, he was always for the kids and he would be the first one to say you know, it's for the kids let's do it," says Winland.

Many ZHS graduates have children that will be attending the new school, and while some of their memories are being torn down, they're excited for new traditions.

"The feeling is, it's sad to see it go, but it's happy to see that the new ones beginning in the back for actually my son and everybody else," says ZHS graduate Mary Dodson.

"Getting in on something new and he can start his own traditions and get attached to the school like i did," says Tami Rollins, ZHS graduate.

Crew members will be putting out bricks along blue avenue for community members to come out and get a piece of the old as they look forward to the new.

"I think it's for the good but I'm going to miss it," says Rollins.
