Kid Injuries

Once school lets out for the year, children have a higher risk of becoming injured from taking part in different summer activities.

The top injury medical professionals deal with are falls, and most of those stem from trampolines and playground incidents.

"One way to prevent serious injuries with playground equipment is to choose playgrounds where the surface is cushioned because serious head injuries occur when children fall on hard surfaces, " says Gloria Kieffer of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department.

Doctors also see bike injuries involving broken arms and legs, but kids can prevent head injuries by wearing a helmet. There are also burns, which kids can even get from hot playground equipment like metal slides. Motor vehicle accidents are common and drownings.

But parents can help prevent these injuries from happening.

"Be mindful. Be aware that there is a certain danger when your child is out playing and try teach them safety habits, " says Kieffer.
