The Colony Square Mall in Zanesville normally closes at six p.m. on Sundays, but it stayed open an extra two-hours Sunday night to help parents and their kids with their back-to-school shopping lists.
Hundreds of people stood in line for hours to receive one of 500 sling backpacks filled with goodies that the mall was giving away to teenagers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Stores were also offering many discounts, which parents say is a relief.
"Savings...big savings, which is good with the economy the way it is, " says parent Mary Senter.
"They're getting more expensive as they get older and pickier, " says parent Heidi Clapper.
But parents and kids weren't the only ones happy. Pinson says stores were ready for the crowds.
"Summer is kind of slow, which is normal, but once August comes and you've got the back-to-school shopping, things really pick-up, " says Pinson.
The Commerce Department is reporting that purchases rose 0.3% in July, which is the first time sales have risen in the past three months.
