A new technology is helping law enforcement nab criminals.

Through Homeland Security funding, the Muskingum County Sheriff's Office recently installed a license plate reader, or LPR which is mounted on the back of cruisers.

"It's a new technology for fighting crime for us. It records license plates off of cars. It compares to a database and helps us to track down stolen vehicles, wanted people associated with those cars, or anything else from an agency that has involvement with that vehicle," says Muskingum County Sheriff, Matt Lutz.

With approximately 2,000 license plates read during a six-hour shift, Sheriff Lutz says that the LPR is having immediate results.

"We've already recovered a couple people that was wanted on minor warrants. So already, we've seen the benefit of this."

Sheriff Lutz says that the Zanesville Police Department also received this technology.
