A Zanesville man is charged in connection with the robbery of a gas station on the West Pike.
24-year-old Hunter McNerney faces one count of aggravated robbery with a firearm specification and one count of theft.
Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz says the suspect allegedly went into the Exxon Gas Station with a mask and an assault-style riffle around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"We've always had drive-offs of gas. It's a little more brazen to walk in a store with a gun. Obviously during the early morning hours, there's not as many people in these places, " says Sheriff Lutz.
Sheriff Lutz says an undisclosed amount of cash was taken, but no one was injured in the incident.
After receiving a description of the suspect, the Sheriff's Office began its investigation. Hunter was taken into custody later that morning. Lutz says it appears the motive was money, which is a reflection of the current economic times.
"With money being hard to come by, and people get to the point where they're willing to do anything to help themselves, " says Sheriff Lutz.
McNerney is currently being held in the Muskingum County Jail until his arraignment.
