Health Myths

You may be making health decisions based on incorrect or outdated information.

WHIZ spoke to Dr. Vicki Whitacre of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department to learn about some health myths that are proven to be untrue. One of those happens to be no way of avoiding Type II Diabetes.

"Type Two diabetes can definitely be avoided, or at least reduced by keeping a healthy weight and eating properly and avoiding overeating," said Dr. Whitacre.

Some people might believe that there is no way to prevent birth defects, which Dr. Whitacre says is definitely not true.

"It has been discovered that a lack of pholic acid which is a vitamin B is associated with what are called neurotube defects, thats defects of the brain and spinal cord," she said.

She says women should take Vitamin B prior to getting pregnant so their levels are up to help prevent birth defects. She also suggests consulting with a doctor if you have any health conditions you are unsure of.
