Some charities are being affected by the economic downturn.

The United Way of Muskingum, Perry and Morgan counties say that's not the case locally. Executive Director Meg Deedrick says while they haven't seen a tremendous growth in donations, they also aren't suffering financially

"When you hear the United Way there is a brand recognition and when you hear Salvation Army and American Red Cross and there are other organizations that when you hear that name there's trust in that brand," said Deedrick.

She says responsibility for transparency is important when operating a non-profit organiation, which she says contributes a great deal to where people are most likely to donate.

"I think the more an organization like we do here at the United Way feel a tremendous responsibility to show people how their money is being invested and what effect that is producing," says the executive director.

She also adds that United Way has the advantage of utilizing a variety of social services where as other non-profits might just focus on one area of need.
