A local superstar is holding a basketball tournament not only for the love of the game.
NBA player and Zanesville-native, Kevin Martin is bringing the inaugural Hoops Kick-Off Basketball Tournament to his home town April 1 to 3. It's something Martin has wanted to do for years, and it's about more than playing the game, it's a way he's giving back.
"Zanesville has done a lot for Kevin, and certainly, he wants everyone in Zanesville to know that. So he's been thinking about doing something like this for quite some time, and now it's just kind of come to fruition and he's able to do it," says Mark Brown, tournament director.
Martin wants to give kids an opportunity to further their education at the college level. It's an important part of the tournament.
"Just to give them a chance to win a scholarship to play a college sport, or more importantly, get a college education," says tournament director Brody Beauford. "Kevin would tell he's been blessed to play at that level, but he also knows there comes a day where basketball ends and you have to have something to fall back on and most important thing is to have an education."
All money raised from the tournament will go to charities.
Sponsors for the tournament include Brand Jordan, and local sponsor Allegra Printing. Anyone interested in sponsoring the tournament or registering a team can visit www.kmart12.com for more information.
The tournament committee expects more than 100 teams to participate, which could bring thousands to the city of Zanesville from outside states.
