If you are looking for free tax preparation services, The United Way can help.
The Financial Stability Partnership's Tax Coalition is teaming up with The United Way to provide free services to eligible individuals and families. Financial Stability Coordinator Amy Davis says following last week's tax law changes, the IRS announced today the upcoming tax season many not start on time for all individuals.
"Individuals who are going to itemize their deductions are not going to be able to file until mid-late February. This is from the IRS, they are not going to have some of their changes in the software done; they estimate from mid-late February," said Amy Davis.
Davis also says millions of workers will see their take home pay rise during 2011 because of the reducing social security tax withholding rate from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent of wages paid. She says this reduced social security withholding will have no effect on future social security benefits. If you would like to file your taxes for free, The United Way will e-file both federal and state tax returns for individuals and families with simple returns.
"We do this absolutely free of charge. That's so individuals don't have to pay any fees to have it done. We can only do simple tax returns for individuals," said Davis.
You can start scheduling appointments at The United Way starting on Wednesday, January 5th.
