Fire Chief Dave Lacy said his final farewell to the Zanesville Fire Department Thursday afternoon, but little did he know he was in for a big surprise. Dresden Police Chief Jeff Garver brought his 1946 Dodge fire truck to the Zanesville Fire Department to pick up Lacy and take him home.
Lacy says his last day was full of surprises, including lunch and a cake from the firefighters, and visits from many of his friends. There is one thing Lacy says he'll miss the most.
"It's just a great group of people, and you really don't understand that until you get into the fire service, and you essentially spend more time with the people that you work with than you do with your family." he says "That's just been the greatest part of it."
Although Thursday marks Lacy's last day with the Zanesville Fire Department, he plans to continue battling blazes in his hometown as a volunteer, and he is excited for what the future holds.
"I'm not going to be without the fire situations and things like that, and that's a big part of your life once you get into this business, and I hope to continue that until I'm 100" Lacy says "It's been a great time here, it's a really happy time for me and I'm looking forward to it."
Craig Stemm has been named interim fire chief, but the Zanesville Fire Department is still in the process of testing to find a permanent replacement.
