Local Hero Honored Through Boy Scouts

Many local boy scouts are being honored for their dedication and hard work.

Awards were given out Saturday to 2011 Silver Beaver recipients at North Terrace Christian Church. 48 Eagle Scouts also received honors , but one Cub Scout received a very special award for his heroic act of saving his grandfather's life.

"We also recognized Ian Whitaker who received the heroism award they only give out 100 nationally so, it's a very fantastic honor to him, " said Jeff Wickerham, District Director.

Approximately 3 million kids and 1 million adults take part in Scouts every year. They feel their life would be very different without their involvement.

"I think it is one of the best programs our country has to offer. It teaches values, it teaches skills, and it teaches things that kids will keep with them for a lifetime," said Wickham.

The Silver Beaver award is the highest a volunteer can receive. A heroism award is one of the highest for any Scout. A reception followed the ceremony.
