Budget Cuts for Zanesville City Schools

Zanesville City Schools Superintendent Terry Martin had the unfortunate task of announcing Friday afternoon that severe budget cuts will be made due to the faltering economy.

"Everything from top to bottom, you begin to look at what you can compress, how much you can save in virtually every area," said Superintendent Terry Martin.

Martin said some of the students will be relocated: sixth graders will remain in their current elementary schools, all seventh and eighth graders will attend Roosevelt Middle School, and the Zanesville Community School program will be moved to Grover Cleveland Middle School. 45 employees will also be laid-off. Those selections will be made based on seniority and certifications.

He said that if they don't implement these budget cuts, they're looking at a $6.2 million deficit by 2013.

"I just want to say that the board as a whole supports Mr. Martin," said Board of Education member Anne Hoffer, "it's a hard decision and he put lots of thought into it on pencil and paper for weeks before he even laid this plan out for us."

No programs will be cut, but they will be scaled down to match the student population.

He hopes the public will be understanding of the situation. "once they really analyze what is being changed to save money, I think they'll grasp it and we'll over all and they'll say hey it's good moves, it sounds business decisions and still sound educationally for the kids."

All changes will be made next school year. A public meeting will be held for any questions or concerns on March 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the Zanesville City School District Administration Office located at 160 N. 4th Street.
