Statistics show that nearly 44 million adults in the United States are unable to read a simple story to their children and the Muskingum County Literacy Council is hoping to change that.
They passed out free childrens books on Saturday and Sunday at the health fair at the Colony Square Mall.
"The goal is to get all the moms and dads to read to their children twenty minutes a day and therefore promote the idea of reading books and literacy," said Member of the Board Gary Felumlee.
He said not learning to read at a young age could have some serious consequences later in life.
"I think it will show up first when they have to now meet all the standards in school, if a children doesn't start early, they find themselves behind very quickly in the system today," said Felumlee.
There was also a silent auction to help raise money for the council. For more information on programs they offer, you can visit
