One of this year's Women of Achievement winners has sent numerous children off to college.
Heather Sands puts her time and energy into the Gear Up program and scholarship central at the Muskingum County Community Foundation which helps students through the college process. It's also what makes her this year's Ethel Granger Schultz Young Adult Award Winner.
"So many students have come back now into our community that have received services from us," said Sands. "It's amazing to hear everything that they've done, whether they've traveled abroad or working in their community at college and then coming back to Zanesville and finding employment here. It's been wonderful."
Sands has helped in the past choosing the Women of Achievement winners and planning the dinner which is why she was caught off guard when this year came around saying she'd won.
"I thought it was odd that I hadn't heard anything or knew a whole lot about the planning. Then Craig Miracle from the Y called me to let me know. I almost hung up on him because I was really excited and almost in shock," explained Sands.
The Women of Achievement dinner will take place on April 20 at Ohio University Zanesville.
