The Muskingum County Special Response Team was called into action early Monday morning to handle a domestic dispute incident.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. at 1530 Richvale Road.
Sheriff Matt Lutz said his deputies originally went to the house to serve a misdemeanor warrant and upon arrival discovered that the couple living there was having an argument. He said they appeared to be heavily intoxicated.
"At that point our officers spoke to the female half and was trying to serve the warrant on the male half and during all of this time the male half locked the doors and barricaded himself inside the residence," said the Sheriff.
He said the female then attempted to break a window to get back inside when officers said they heard what sounded like a gun shot. The SWAT Team was brought in and after two hours of negotiating, the man finally surrendered.
"When we know we've got a guy who's on some alcohol or drugs and has weapons and has already fired a weapon the first thing we're going to do is officer safety and protect the safety of our citizens," he said.
No one was injured and the man was taken to the hospital for medical and psychological evaluations. His name is not being released at this time. The case will be presented to the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office for possible charges.
Authorities are continuing to investigate.
