Some area runners are leaving the city to explore the wild.
The 2011 Ecothon Run for a Claws took place at the Wilds in Cumberland on Saturday. The conservation sits on nearly 10,000 acres and is home to rare and endangered species from all over the world.
"It's all about getting the people to our facility to show it off, it's a new year for us here at the Wilds and it's also an opportunity for those who want to get out and run around the beautiful acreage that we have," said C.O.O. Tom Stalf of the Wilds.
Participants could either run or walk the 5 or 10k trail. Stalf said every single dollar raised will be donated directly back to the Wilds.
"We have scientist here, we have research going on and we are studying these endangered species and unfortunately theres a lot of habitats that were losing out in the wild," he said. "If we don't learn how to take care of the animals and learn exactly what they need, we'll never be able to save them out in the wild."
The Wilds offers a variety of activities including safaris, horseback riding, and overnight lodging. For more information you can visit their website at www.thewilds.org
