It's time now to announce the Zanesville Appalachian Arts Project featured artist for this month.
Muskingum University Art Professor and Gallery Director Yan Sun specializes in oil painting. His work has been known nationally and internationally. While we were not able to catch up with Sun to talk to him about his work, ZAAP's Gary Graham spoke with us about how soon got started in the art field. He says it began for him when he was a young coal miner.
"Started with pencil sketches of the miners that he worked with and did field paintings of the areas where the mines were kept that he became so familiar with," said Graham.
From there, his career took off and quickly found many of his life-like pieces being showcased all across Ohio.
"Some realism in some areas. Other areas just a form of personal feeling that he brings out with the subjects that he's chosen. A little different than many other artists and I think that's what makes him stand out," said Graham.
To see some of Sun's work, you can stop by the ZAAP gallery from 5 to 8 p-m in downtown Zanesville Friday night for May's First Friday.
