Kids offering to mow lawns for a little extra cash this summer, should know what dangers lie beneath.
When mowing the lawn, a lot of safety tips may seem obvious, but Home Depot's At-Home-Service Coordinator, Frank Berlo, said, they are easy to forget when you're busy with summer activities. The main precaution Berlo emphasizes, is to be aware of kids in the area.
"Take the key with you, there could be neighborhood children or your own children that want to take it for a ride," said Berlo."And that's definitely dangerous."
To prevent injury when mowing hills, always mow up-and-down, not side-to-side. Berlo said, it's easy to tip over on walking and riding mowers. He said, these tips may seem obvious, but if you are considering having your child mow the lawn as a chore for the first time, they need to know it can be dangerous. Use your judgment if they are ready for the responsibility.
"You want to make sure you give the 100% of your time and instruction," said Berlo. "So they know exactly what to do."
Be aware of the discharge guard on the side of the mower, Berlo said, he has seen people adjust it while mowing. Always turn off the mower before making any adjustments. Flying debris, blades, and the heat from the mower can cause serious injury.
