It may seem there has been an unusual amount of shootings in the Zanesville area recently...But police say, it may not be as uncommon as it appears.
Zanesville Police Officers have been dispatched to a number of shootings in recent weeks. Chief, Eric Lambes, said, the increase isn't exclusive to Zanesville, and that Columbus has also been dealing with an unusual amount of gun fire. He said, these incidents are often times drug related, but in many cases, weather related.
"We get that a lot every year as we get closer to the 4th of July," said Lambes. "We will get some people who think that's their way of celebrating, which is shooting shells in the air, but you know, that can be very dangerous, people have been hurt because they come down."
Lambes said, drug activity is always an issue in the area, and it is often difficult to prosecute the situations because no one will come forward with information.
"We would like to have somebody come forward if they have information," said Lambes. "We always like to prosecute these kinds of crime because there is potential for people to get hurt."
Lambes warns, it is illegal to discharge any type of fire arm within the city of Zanesville. State Attorney General, Mike Dewine, is currently organizing a new panel, whose focus will be getting violent gun criminals off of Ohio streets.
