One small village hasn't forgotten the meaning behind this Independence day and put on a big celebration to prove it.
The Village of Somerset stepped off their early holiday celebration with a parade followed by festivities including of course, fireworks. Chairman, Dennis Kessler said this is the 27th year the village has put on their parade. He himself, has been apart of the parade committee since the beginning with attendance always being high but one change he's noticed is funding. He said, the first years budget for fireworks was $900.
"Probably shouldn't tell you the number we do this year but it's quite considerably more than that," said Kessler. "We are just under $20,000 this year."
Kessler said this is one of the biggest events held in Somerset with about 10,000 people coming out each year. He enjoys seeing the families together and honoring those who serve.
"Because this is what it's all about a free Independence Day,' said Kessler. "And this is a free country and we're going to stay that way."
The event, organized by a local committee of volunteers, helps to raise money which goes right back into the Village.
