The Muskingum County Commissioners met Thursday afternoon to discuss a possible new federal grant for transportation improvement projects.
Muskingum County Planning Commission Executive Director Andy Roberts approached the commissioners about the grant, given by the US Department of Transportation, and thought the county might benefit from what it has to offer.
"They just opened this up on July 18th, it was 140 million dollars earmarked for rural projects, they focus on multi-modal forms of transportation," said Roberts.
They include projects like road improvements, bridge and rail repairs, as well as repairs to ports along waterways, but some criteria must be met in order to receive the funding.
"Safety, economic competitiveness, state of good repair, liveability, and environmental sustainability, so they're looking at all 5 of those criteria," said Roberts.
The commissioners are expected to look into possibly applying for the grant.
