A two month hydrant flushing project is underway in Muskingum County.
Over one thousand hydrants are being flushed by county water workers. There is two reasons for this. One is to remove sediment from the line and the other is to check each hydrant to see if it needs repaired. If this wasn't done it could spell danger.
"In an emergency the fire department would try to access into a hydrant. It could be inoperable or need repairs and so they would have to move to another hydrant," said Don Madden from the Muskingum County Water Department. "Of course any delay in an emergency causes issues for the fire department."
Madden said while hydrants are being flushed residents could experience issues with their water.
"They flush hydrant lines at a much faster speed then what would be flowing and so it will have a tendency to stir the water," said Madden. "Residents could see the discolored water in this area."
It's suggested you avoid doing laundry until the water is running clear. Hydrant flushing will take place in the Dresden Road area between 9am-3pm this week. For a complete list of areas affected click on the Muskingum County Water Department link.
