After a heated debate at Monday nights Zanesville City Council Meeting a truce has been called between the City and County.
The ordinance that would contract Licking County's Building Department to handle some of Zanesville's building inspection services was scrapped. Thursday morning Zanesville's Mayor Butch Zwelling and Code Enforcement Officer Tim Smith apologized to Muskingum County Commissioners for the behavior in Monday night's City Council Meeting.
"With the dialogue we've had and the confrontation we've had over the last few weeks, this is, I mean it feels like a weight off my chest," said Smith. "I'm sure it is off the Commissioners as well. "
The City and Commissioners have agreed to rest the issue until Commissioners are able to replace current Building Department Administrator Jim Waymer- who will be retiring later this month. At that time Smith will meet with Waymer's successor to determine what will benefit both the City and County.
"I think it's an excellent idea I believe," said Muskingum County Commissioner Jim Porter. "Start all over wait until we get a new building Department Administrator, let them negotiate and I think it's a great idea."
The controversial ordinance had been post-pone three times in recent weeks as both parties were unable to agree.
