The Muskingum County Fair always draws a big crowd, and with all those people, safety is a top priority.
The Muskingum County Sheriff's Office communicates with the Fair Board to determine where security is needed. Sheriff Matt Lutz said it takes about 25 people to secure the fairgrounds.
"We have officers that work the grandstand during concerts, during truck and tractor pulls, during rough trucks, providing security to make sure the crowd stays back," said Lutz.
Lutz said his staff has been busy so far - incidents of theft, vandalism and public intoxication have been reported. He said fair activity does not distract from the office's normal duties.
"Most of the guys that come over here, this is extra duty for them, they have either already done their shift, or they have to do their shift next, so it really doesn't interfere with any of our normal staffing standards at the office," said Lutz.
