Maple Avenue isn't the only construction project affecting drivers in Zanesville.
Northpointe Drive is closed for repairs from Richvale Road to State Route 60 in Dresden. Muskingum county engineer Doug Davis said the roadway is problematic because it was built on mine spoilage.
"It's still sitting on the mine spoil, and the dirt is good dirt, but it's not at proper moisture content," said Davis. "When the hillsides start taking on water, the clay particles swell and then they slide."
Initially, local contractors were going to fix the damage, but the governor declared a state of fiscal emergency due to the amount of rain in our area over the summer.
"We applied for federal monies to help out with the project," said Davis. "It's now 100% federal funding to repair that slide, but the slide must be repaired within six months of the federal declaration."
Davis said seven other slips will receive bids on Thursday. He said he expects to meet the November 15th deadline, weather-permitting.
