A community race commemorated a fallen Marine from our area nearly 7 years ago who fought in Iraq.
It was the annual 5K in Dresden for Sergeant Brad Harper. Friends of his traveled from as far as Virginia to show their support for the Harper family.
"In our line of work we understand that these things are going to happen," said Friend Jason Lyons. "one of the things that gives us comfort at the end of the day is we have someone there to help us, someone who will be there for our family."
Also at the race was a memorial recognizing the 23 soldiers of the Columbus-based Lima Company. The paintings included Harper, although not a part of the original unit Harper was with them when the deadly attack took place.
"He would not want to be singled out, he would want everybody, especially that made the big sacrifice to be honored," said his Father Steve Harper. "I think through him this is one way it can be done."
Proceeds from the race will benefit the local Toys for Tots.
