Any unused or expired medication can safely be disposed of this Saturday at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department.
The Drug Enforcement Administration has once again asked local law enforcement to collect prescription and over the counter medications. Muskingum County has stepped up the effort to not only accept tablet and pill forms but liquids and needles as well.
"If you leave these things in your medicine cabinet or if you leave these things in your home, we've had people where they have friends or family steel them to use," said Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz. "We've had homes broken into where people will go though looking for prescription pills."
New this year - a permanent take back site will be available. Beginning Sunday you can drop off any unused or expired medication to the Muskingum County Jail. The drug vault will be available 24-7.
"Over the last two or three years we have had so many people call and say they've had a loved one pass away and they have all this medication and they don't want to wait until we have our take back day," said Lutz.
Saturday's take back site will be open from 10-2:00 at the Health Department in Downtown Zanesville. The program is free and anonymous. All personal information will be cut off the original containers and destroyed.
