There are currently 202 registered sex offenders living in Muskingum County - and no Ohio laws keeping them from passing out candy on Halloween.
Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said he can't recall any reset incidents that took place in connection with Trick-or-Treat and Sex Offenders but encourages families to know their neighborhood and beware of the homes your children are visiting.
"The best thing I tell people is, if your kids are in that time frame where they are going out by themselves make sure they have a phone with them or you have some place to meet and pick them up, so if they don't come at that time you can make arrangements to go find them," said Lutz.
To see if any sex offenders live in your neighborhood, you can visit the Ohio Muskingum Sheriffs web site, and click " Sex Offenders" on the left side of the screen. You can search by county, name, or school district.
"Anytime you have Trick-or-Treat, I think there is a safety issue from all stand points," said Lutz. "Obviously, as you said, that adds a new dimension to it, them being in a house, turning a porch light on and letting kids walk right up to the house."
Lutz reminds that not all sex offenders committed a crime against a child. You can expect to see additional patrols out this evening.
