Hunters are being encouraged to donate their deer meat to those in need.
Each year the Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry Ministry will take donated deer, have it processed at a reduced price, and then give the venison to local food pantries. Coordinator Robert Daniels said both the meat and funding for processing is needed.
"The nice thing about Ohio, and we're unique around the country, is the Division of Wildlife provides a dollar-for-dollar match," explained Daniels. "So whatever I raise, if I raise $3,000 they give us $3,000."
The Owner of Phillips Meat Processing Dale Phillips said one deer provides about 200 meals. Last year the donated meat provided more than 850,000 meals within Muskingum County.
"People have great hearts, they realize that people need this and so they take their time," said Phillips. "They like to hunt and it's a good way for them to give back."
Daniels said this year's harvest is down due to rain earlier in the week. Both, deer donations and funding for the processing, is still needed.
