Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz will be recognized as a 2012 Officer of the Month.
The honor comes from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Sheriff Lutz was surprised with the announcement at the Muskingum County Commissioners Office.
"According to his e-mails I thought he was concerned, he was talking about wanting to know what it pertained to and if he needed to bring anything," laughed Commissioner Jim Porter. "It was kind of just a general, you know show up."
The Commissioners had nominated Lutz for the award following the release of 56 wild, exotic animals from Terry Thompson's Farm on Kopchak Road. Porter said Lutz was unanimously chosen by the Memorial Fund's deciding board.
"It's a total shock first of all," expressed Lutz. "It's a very nice feeling that they would take the time to submit the application, think enough of me and the office to submit that for the reward."
Sheriff Lutz will be will be recognized in Washington, DC, during National Police Week in May. In addition he will be featured in the Memorial Fund's annual calendar, as the January Officer of the month.
